Primary Goal of the Operation
Cascade Call for the Triveneto area of Spoke 1, funded under the iNEST – Interconnected Nord-Est Innovation Ecosystem research program, within the framework of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP), M4C2 – Investment 1.5 "Creation and strengthening of Innovation Ecosystems for Sustainability", funded by the European Union – NextGenerationEU (CUP: I43C22000250006 – Project ID: ECS00000043).
Project Goal
The WildGuard project aims to enhance safety in mountain regions, focusing on the coexistence between humans and wildlife—particularly bears—and on the safety of hikers along nature trails.
The cooperative network of smart electronic sensors developed within WildGuard will be energy-autonomous and environmentally friendly, using natural sources such as sunlight and motion to harvest the energy required by the sensors.
This system of advanced electronic devices enables real-time monitoring of both animals and people through near-zero-power smart cameras, without relying on GPS signals. This eliminates service interruptions due to signal loss or depleted batteries and does not require dedicated servers for extended data coverage.
The system’s distributed architecture offers robustness and flexibility, allowing it to adapt to any terrain and scale without structural changes.
WildGuard’s expected outcomes go beyond technological innovation. The project addresses a pressing issue for local authorities and citizens: safety during recreational and work activities in mountain areas where bears are present.
By providing low-cost, competitive prevention tools compared to current commercial solutions, the project aims to detect and predict bear presence, while also supporting ecological research and offering guidance on safe hiking routes.
